Artist statement

Using the ancient craft of wet felting I use merino wool and silk to create abstract pieces of the ancient land upon which I live.  Creating texture and movement with varying fabrics, fibres and paper my often-aerial perspective is finished with stitching and beading to reinforce the immeasurable yet immersive feel of the land.  All my work is based on the many years that I lived out bush and the deep connection and longing to continually return to it.  I love a big sky and a visible horizon.

Triptych – Bark
Minirichi Bark The Eucalyptus Caesia – Silver Princess – is know for its hanging silver white branches but the main trunk bark turns a deep russet red, splits into curls that reveal an almost acid lime colour beneath.  Paper Bark  Layers of parchment like bark peel back to reveal the new epidermis of this swamp and salt loving tree that cleans and filters billabongs throughout WA.  En masse the ethereal nature of their peeling bark and twisted trunks creates a fantasy like dreamscape.  Compressed Bark Eucalyptus gomphocephala – Tuart or White Gum – is a very large, long lived eucalypt for which my suburb is named.  Its bark doesn’t peel off like most other Eucalypts it compacts and compresses to create many crevices for all kinds of life.
