Inspired by an Orry Kelly gown designed for Marilyn Monroe who was very unlike a flapper in silhouette (in fact she fluctuated between a size 14 and size 16), but was playing a woman musician in the movie “Some like it hot” set in 1929. His compromise was a fairly straight cut shift with sheer, near nude, beaded netting to display her “talents”. The result was nothing like a flapper but very Marilyn. The sheer, near nude look went on to be a look that Marilyn and Orry-Kelly pursued until her death. Black felt bats, silk chiffon with hand painted detail.
